NFL Teams Looking For Coaches
Every year, many coaches in the NFL don’t meet the high expectations their owners have for them. These coaches usually get fired the day after the season, “Black Monday” to most fans. Many coaches also leave their team or retire at the end of the season. Many teams will have decisions to make on who they will hire.
The Oakland Raiders have already made a big splash in the coaching carousel. They were a team that many thought would make the playoffs and be competitive. With a 6-10 record this year they fired their Head Coach, Jack Del Rio, after their season ending loss to the Chargers. The Raiders announced the hiring of Jon Gruden to replace him on January 9th. Gruden was the ESPN Monday Night Football analyst and the Raiders Head Coach from 1998-2001. The Raiders signed him to a 10-year, $100 million deal.
After going 5-11 this year, the Chicago Bears fired their head coach John Fox. Fox had coached with the team for three years. Chicago announced that the Chiefs offensive coordinator, Matt Nagy, was hired as their replacement for Fox on January 8th. Nagy has spent his entire coaching career under Andy Reid and has never been a Head Coach. It will be interesting to see how he does in his new position.
The Detroit Lions fired their head coach, Jim Caldwell, after they went 9-7 this year. Caldwell was there for four years and led them to the playoffs twice with a 36-28 overall record with the team. The Lions are looking at multiple options for the position. These options include Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, and Minnesota offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur.
With their 4-12 record and another missed playoff appearance, the Colts fired their Head Coach Chuck Pagano. In the six years that Pagano coached, he made the playoffs his first three years while missing it the last three years. Pagano had an overall record of 56-46 with the team. The Colts are looking into Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich, and Shurmur as well for their coaching job.
Arizona’s head coach, Bruce Arians, retired at the end of the season following the team’s 8-8 record. Arizona is going to have a major rebuilding year as their head coach and starting quarterback, Carson Palmer, have retired. Arians spent five years coaching the Cardinals with a 50-32-1 record with them. The Cardinals are looking into Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo, their own defensive coordinator James Bettcher, and Patricia.
New York Giants
The Giants fired their head coach Ben McAdoo on December 4th. McAdoo was in the midst of a 2-10 season and a dramatic benching of their beloved quarterback Eli Manning. Patriots coach Bill Belichick is rumored among fans to be leaving to go to his former team. The Giants have also looked into Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, McDaniels, and Patricia.
