Finding safety in safety pins

Since the results of the presidential election came in, it left many people, including minorities, feeling afraid and uneasy.  The day after Donald Trump was elected, several reports of harassment appeared nationwide. So, while protests broke out around the country, so did the simple but meaningful movement of wearing safety pins.

The safety pin movement started in the United Kingdom following the country’s decision to leave the European Union. By wearing a safety pin on their clothing, many Americans are saying that they stand with those who are victims of oppression such as racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia and religious discrimination.

Many post photos of themselves wearing a safety pin on Twitter and other forms of social media with captions stating, “If you need me I am here for you” using the tag #safetypin.

However, some Americans have taken the movement and reversed its meaning and taken it as anti-trump. The movement, instead, is more about anti-hate and being there for others when they need help.
