Among all the other problems the world is facing, equality continues to dominate at the top of the list. Gender studies show that gender gaps exist in certain jobs, earnings, and sectors of work. Our society constantly faces a gap in the amount of opportunities and participation that are given to men, and often times; not given to women. This might not come as a surprise to most, but is it right for women to beg for equality in certain situations and not others? Day after day we continue to grow as a society in equality, but there is still a lot of room to develop.

Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social and economic equality of men. The feminist movement’s goal is to have complete equality between men and women. The problem is that sometimes the word “complete” is misunderstood. Often times, individuals forget that they have to deal with the negative aspects of complete equality. Along with equality, there comes both the good and the bad of being equal. For example, men are still required to sign up for selective service, while women are not even brought to the subject. If feminists support true equality then they should suggest women should sign up for the services as well. Another example is the issue of rape. Fingers are time and time again instantly pointed at men. Although women may seem incapable of rape, statistics say differently. Nearly one in ten women are have been raped by an intimate partner in her lifetime. Approximately one in forty-five men are raped or sexually assaulted by a woman. It is more likely a man is at fault in a situation like this, but a woman is definitely capable of rape as well. Rape is the most under-reported crime worldwide. Around 63% of rape cases are not reported to the police, which means less that 40% are reported and investigated. Many do not realize this and it is something that can and should be addressed by feminists. Parties are a prime example of a place where women are just as capable of becoming intoxicated and performing an action such as rape. If two people are intoxicated and sexual intercourse takes place, even if both sides are consensual, men are often given the blame.

Society’s ultimate goal is for all citizens to be treated equally, whether in the case of gender, race, wealth or education. With gender equality being at the top of the list, it still is very challenging to recognize all of the aspects that come along with it. Hopefully, there is a day when ¨equality – all or nothing¨ literally means all or nothing.
