To start the beginning of the KHS girls varsity basketball season, the Kearney High Bearcats scrimmaged Grand Island Northwest. On Sat., Nov. 28, the Bearcats were able to outscore the Vikings, winning the game 43-42.
At the start, the Bearcats were a little flat, only scoring four points in the first quarter. When halftime rolled around, KHS was down 12-8, in what seemed like a very low scoring game.
After an inspiring halftime speech made by coach Jason Boyd, the girls found their rhythm. Senior Lauren Speicher and junior Kelsey Clark found the basket for the Bearcats multiple times. The Bearcats ended up taking the lead towards the end of the game and kept it.
Defensively, Kearney brought the heat after half when they started their full court zone and man press. The team got many defensive steals that lead into quick, transition baskets.
The Lady Cats will officially have their first game on Thurs., Dec. 3 at 5pm in the KHS gym.
