The movie The 33 was a challenge to create for director Patricia Riggen because of what actually happens and how it unfolds. Riggen had to be able to create suspense and drama without changing the storyline too much; however, Riggen’s does an excellent job of creating suspense throughout the movie.

She does this in the beginning of the movie, by starting with all the main characters being at a party. One of them is an elderly miner who’s retiring. There is an experienced fellow who’s asking his buddy and foreman for an extra shift on a day he’s supposed to have off; another is a younger miner who’s about to become a father and who’s looking into getting out of the mining business as a result.

The director did an amazing job with the cast and portrayed the movie well, while sticking with the actual live events without completely changing it into a Hollywood movie. Here are some of the characters: Mario played by Antonio Banderas, Laurence played by Rodrigo Santoro, and Jeff played by James Brolin.
