The Cats came out with a strong victory against the Columbus Discoverers on Oct. 16, Kearney High’s Senior Night. KHS won the first two sets, barely lost the third and came out on top with a win in the fourth set. The scores were 25-23, 25-20, 24-26 and 25-21. Helping with the Bearcats’ victory were seniors Katie Higgins with 26 kills, Emily Koski with eight kills and sophomore Maggie McGowan with 35 set assists and three kills. The Lady Cats will compete against North Platte and Grand Island Senior High on Oct. 20 in their home triangular. The KHS varsity team will start playing at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Cross country girls tred through the snow

The Kearney High girls cross country team had another outstanding performance at the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference held in Scottsbluff on Sat., Oct. 6. Despite the snow-covered course, both junior varsity and varsity claimed the championship titles. For the Bearcats, sophomore Megan Sughroue won the individual title in the varsity race. She won with a time of 15:06. Following Sughroue was junior Delaney McFadden in 4th place with a time of 15:40 and senior Jordyn Dahlke in 5th place with a 15:42. Senior Mandy Sughroue finished in 9th followed by junior Jade Cook in 12th, freshman Hannah Sickler in 13th and senior Michelle Bowman in 14th to contribute to the overall team score. The Bearcats…

The Kearney High Marching Band competed in the UNK Band Day Parade on Sat., Sept. 22. After marching the new parade route, Nathan LeFeber, head band director at Kearney High, announced that they had won the best drum line, the best AA band and also the Sweepstakes. “I think that the kids worked really hard to get this and did a great job of representing KHS and the band to the community,” said Mr. LeFeber. E-readers have taken technology to the next level. Manly people like and dislike the different things an E-reader can provide. They are light and portable, but do not have the real feel of a book. Turkey responds to Syrian attacks

A Syrian mortar killed five and injured eight people in Akcakale Turkey on Oct. 3, 2012. After this attack Turkey recoiled by firing artillery rounds twice on Oct. 4. Though Syria was advised to say the attack was a mistake by Russia, and was condemned by the UN for the attack, there have been continuous attacks on the Turkey border. Likewise, Turkey has continued to retaliate with artillery fire after each mortar round. Since the attack on Oct. 3, most of the mortar strikes landed in rural areas, resulting in no casualties.
